And now for the eye roll-inducing part of the news.

“African expert” and actress Angelina Jolie is directing a movie called Africa – all about elephant poaching and stuff. The reason she’s making the film is because she’s, like, superbonded to this continent, you guys.

“I’ve felt a deep connection to Africa and its culture for much of my life,” she said in an interview with Variety magazine.

“I was taken with Eric Roth’s beautiful script about a man drawn into the violent conflict with elephant poachers and who emerged with a deeper understanding of man’s footprint and a profound sense of responsibility for the world around him.”

The film is about Kenyan paleoanthropologist and conservationist Richard Leakey’s fight against ivory poaching. I mean, what Leakey did was admirable, but an American screenplay made by an American actress? How true to the African experience could this possibly be?

I predict lots of black sidekicks running around and a great deal of emphasis on white hero Leakey’s gallantry in this deepest, darkest, most exotic continent of ours.

But let’s wait and see.
