Big sigh! Just when you think Marvel would start catering more to its 47% female comic book-reading audience, they release an alternative cover for the new Spider-Woman comic.

Critique erupted on the internet, and rightly so.

But in the perfect example of “mansplaining” (condescendingly explaining a topic to a woman on the basis that she knows less than a man), internet commenter Maddox argued that the sexual depiction of Spider-Woman should not be seen as a big deal, since Spider-Man has been put in the same poses in the past.

He calls it a hypocritical double standard and lambastes feminists for having a problem with Marvel’s Spider-Woman. It seems almost redundant to point out that one cannot compare the two because there isn’t a history of objectification of males in virtually every sphere of life. Nor is every single male comic book character ever created sexualised like this.

He goes on to say that Spider-Woman’s pose in this instance looks an awful lot like Nicki Minaj’s booty pose in her video for Anaconda and, by that logic, women shouldn’t complain if they’re “objectifying themselves”.

Thing is, Minaj choosing to highlight her sexuality is different to a few men in a drawing studio illustrating every female comic book character in existence this way. We hate the cover and wish Marvel would take a leap into the 21st century. Nxa!
