OR Tambo International Airport, in Kempton Park, was back to full capacity after an attempted cable theft caused flight delays.

“We can confirm that normal fuelling operations have resumed after the airport had been operating at significantly reduced fuelling capacity for about 10 hours yesterday,” Airports Company SA (Acsa) spokesperson Unathi Batyashe-Fillis said in a statement today.

“Technicians were able to restore power to the badly damaged cables just after 8pm last night. The fuel pumps are now able to transmit fuel for uplift into aircraft.”

Yesterday, attempted cable theft outside the airport’s perimeter in the early hours of the morning prevented the transmission of fuel to aircraft.

Domestic and international flights were affected, resulting in delays of most airlines yesterday, Batyashe-Fillis said.

She said that despite a major backlog, all scheduled aircraft had departed last night with no flight cancellations.

“On behalf of Acsa, we wish to express our appreciation to our stakeholders and passengers for their understanding during this time,” she said.

“As management of the largest and busiest airport in Africa, we also wish to convey our regret following this incident, which severely impacted our operations, but more importantly inconvenienced both our passengers and airline partners.”

Batyashe-Fillis said the police were investigating.
