Obituary – Nkosiphendule Kolisile

2013-07-21 10:00

Nkosiphendule Kolisile will be remembered for leading the revolt that forced the national government to change an unpopular decision to move Khutsong township to North West.

Kolisile died with bodyguards Tshepo Jobo and Tebogo Motsei in Reddersburg, about 60km out of Bloemfontein, Free State, on their way to attend a funeral in Eastern Cape.

In addition to being an MEC for economic development in Gauteng, the 40-year-old was the deputy chairperson of the West Rand ANC Chapter. He has also led the Gauteng SA Communist Party in the recent past.

He led the successful revolt against the unpopular decision by president Thabo Mbeki’s administration to place Khutsong within the borders of North West. The decision was later reversed in 2008 after Mbeki was recalled as president, and Khutsong remained in Gauteng.

Yesterday, Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane paid tribute to Kolisile, saying he had played a key role in restoring peace in the township as well as in its reintegration.

He had been a member of the Gauteng legislature since 2009, and was appointed to the provincial cabinet after last year’s reshuffle.

On Mandela Day on Thursday, he donated three houses to poor families in Mohlakeng on Gauteng’s West Rand, as part his 67-minutes. He had initiated the project last year.

Kolisile is survived by his wife Phozisa and five young children.
