Off-form Teko in Bafana squad

2010-09-30 13:08

rBafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane has rallied behind off-form Teko Modise by including the Orlando Pirates midfielder in a squad to face Sierra Leone in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Freetown, Sierra Leone, next Sunday.

Mosimane said it was important to support all the players and he believed Modise needed all the support he could get.

“Just because he missed one game does not mean he should be dropped,” said Mosimane. “I have supported other players when they had problems with their clubs, so why not Teko?” asked Mosimane.

He said Modise was still an integral part of the team and deserved a chance to reclaim his position in the line-up.

“I didn’t make too many changes, because I believe if it is not broken you don’t fix it because the main focus once again is continuity, building from the last two matches. We are going there for the three points but we know it will be a difficult assignment, but we must adjust to the conditions.”

This will be the third time that South Africa will play Sierra Leone. In one of the two matches, Bafana Bafana lost one nil and played the other to a goalless draw.

“Having beaten us in 2008 they will fancy their chances. They are playing at home so they will be full of confidence, especially after their draw against Egypt earlier this month.

“We need to be cautious in our approach, be tight at the back but at the same time not be afraid to attack. They are very physical and strong mentally, but our boys are in a good mental state following the two victories against Ghana and Niger.

“We are playing good football and that is an excellent foundation for us to tackle this difficult assignment in Sierra Leone. We are confident that we will bring back the results because we need to achieve our objective of retaining our position at the top of the group,” added the coach.

The team assembles on Monday before jetting out on Friday morning.

The squad:
Goalkeepers: Itumeleng Khune, Moeneeb Josephs, Darren Keet
Defenders: Siboniso Gaxa, Morgan Gould, Tsepo Masilela, Aaron Mokoena, Anele Ngcongca, Siyabonga Sangweni, Bongani Khumalo, Innocent Mdledle
Midfielders: Siphiwe Tshabalala, Teko Modise, Thanduyise Khuboni, Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Steven Pienaar, MacBeth Sibaya, Andile Jali
Strikers: Katlego Mphela, Surprise Moriri, Bernard Parker, Sthembiso Ngcobo.
