Off-key, chaotic Samas for Jozi

2011-05-14 15:12

A monstrous 5 000-seater Sama dome has gone up at Montecasino, north of Joburg, heralding the much-anticipated 17th edition of the SA Music Awards.

The star-studded bash is expected to draw large crowds to the Tuscan-themed entertainment venue. Yet behind the scenes things are out of tune.

The presenters for the first leg of the Samas were announced on Friday night.

The best newcomer nod for the hugely popular Liquideep was withdrawn two weeks ago and a replacement has still not been finalised.

The “best of” Sama nominees hit album, which usually gets released along with the nominations list, was only released on Thursday, three weeks after the nominations party.

Kevin Grenfell, new music marketing manger at EMI, said his company received the final list of nominees from the Sama office later than usual.

“It’s not ideal and it has been pressing to get the album out. It’s a relief that it is finally out in time for the awards at least,” he said.

The tracklisting includes Liquideep, Professor, Crazy White Boy, Zakes and DJ Kent.

Hiccups aside, girl of the moment, radio and TV personality Bonang Matheba, will team up with motormouth DJ and Real Goboza presenter Phat Joe to host the award ceremony on Saturday night.

The ceremony will be broadcast live on SABC1 from 8pm.

Comedian Trevor Noah hosted the awards for the last two years.

Spokesperson for the Sama, Caroline Hillary of Redflag, guaranteed the biggest yellow carpet ever, with stars Miss SA Bokang Montjane, zef rappers Die Antwoord and socialite Khanyi Mbau in attendance as well as award nominees.

The guest list has been kept a secret as have the onstage musical collaborations.

John Savage from 5fm is the musical director.

There will be three VIP after-parties and a winners’ after-party, which will be very exclusive.

There will also be a massive public after-party on the Piazza, with performances by The Parlotones and many others.
