Official funeral for Asmal

2011-06-24 07:27

Politician Kader Asmal will receive an official funeral, the presidency said yesterday.

President Jacob Zuma had also declared a period of national mourning from today until the evening of cremation, said presidential spokesperson Harold Maloka.

All national flags would fly at half-mast in the country and at foreign missions for the same period.

The date of cremation had yet to be confirmed.

Asmal died at the age of 76 in hospital in Cape Town on Wednesday after having a heart attack on Tuesday.

He was the minister of water affairs and forestry from 1994, a member of the ANC’s national executive committee, and education minister from 1999 to 2004.

Asmal had deep insight and vision for education, the SA Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu) said yesterday.

“Sadtu will remember Professor Asmal as a man with a deep insight and vision for education. We will remember him for his child-centred approach to education. He always emphasised that all children can be successful, not necessarily at the same time and on the same level,” the union said.

Sadtu said Asmal emphasised that children should not be measured by outcomes only, “but measured by the successes achieved getting to an outcome”.
