Olympics: Injuries trouble Banyana

2012-06-14 11:32

Banyana Banyana players Nomathemba Ntsibande and Yola Jafta will miss the 2012 London Olympics Games.

Coach Joseph Mkhonza said he was advised by the medical team that Ntsibande and Jafta would not make it to London because of injuries.

“I’m sad that they won’t make it. The medical team said if they recover soon, they will still need six weeks to get fit. We can’t risk it. Now we can move on and play with what we have,” said Mkhonza.

He confirmed that the squad that was named last week would remained unchanged. This also means their veteran striker Portia Modise’s seat is secured.

Mkhonza also announced that their defender, Janine van Wyk, was still nursing a groin injury but expected to recover ahead of the Olympics.

Van Wyk didn’t take part in this week’s training session for the African Women’s Championship second-leg qualifier against Zambia at in Nelspruit on Saturday.

The South Africans lead Zambia 4-1 from the first leg, which took place in Lusaka two weeks ago.

“We have rested Janine as we were advised by our medical team,” said Mkhonza.
