A caretaker was killed and six of her children seriously injured when their school bus collided with a truck in Soweto, Johannesburg emergency services said today.

“The bus, carrying 59 disabled learners and a caretaker, collided with a truck on the corner of Chris Hani and Klipspruit Valley road at 7.30am this morning,” spokesperson Percy Morokane said.

The caretaker (55) died and the six children were seriously injured, he said. They were taken to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital for further treatment.
The remaining kids escaped with minor injuries.

Morokane said the truck driver, in his mid thirties, was arrested on reckless and negligent driving charges.

The bus had been transporting children from their homes in Soweto to the Philip Kushlick School for cerebral palsy, situated at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.

On Wednesday, 21 children were seriously injured when their minibus taxi collided with a car on the N1 highway near Nasrec.

It is believed the taxi had been transporting the children to a school for the mentally handicapped in Maraisburg.
