One more dies after old age home fire

Another person has died following the fire at a Nigel old age home, bringing the death toll to 23.

Spokesperson of the Gauteng department of health and social development Mandla Sidu said the man died at Pholosong hospital last night.

The fire broke out at Pieter Wessels old age home, Dunnottar around 9pm on Sunday, leaving 18 dead and over 40 pensioners with injuries. Four others later died in hospital.

Eighty-four people were rescued and had since been accommodated at other old age homes in the area.

The victims of the fire would be remembered in a memorial service at the Nigel Community Hall at noon today.

It would be attended by Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane, health and social development MEC Qedani Mahlangu and Ekurhuleni mayor Ntombi Mekgwe.
