Only 45% of urban South Africans satisfied with health services – survey

2012-07-19 09:50

An average of 45% of adult South Africans living in cities are happy with public health services in their area.

This is according to a survey released by TNS today.

“This drops to 22% for Indians and Asians, 37% for those in the Eastern Cape, and 38% for those in Cape Town,” the company said in a statement.

TNS surveyed 2 000 adults in the country’s eight major metropolitan areas between March and April this year.

The study has a margin of error of less than 2.5% for the overall result.

In total, 48% said they were unhappy with health services in their area.

Eight percent gave a “don’t know” response.

There were no differences by sex, age, or wealth.

Residents of the Eastern Cape and Cape Town were least happy overall, while those in Bloemfontein and the East Rand, Gauteng, were the most satisfied.

“It is clear that the state of the public health system is very poorly perceived by many metro dwellers, irrespective of area, wealth or other circumstances,” said TNS.

“The adequate provision of health services is, for many, an emotive issue and is clearly seen as a priority by many.”
