Five opposition parties have come together to submit a motion of no confidence in National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete.

The Congress of the People, Democratic Alliance, Economic Freedom Fighters, Freedom Front Plus and United Democratic Movement are set to submit the motion tomorrow.

Today they called on African National Congress MPs to support the motion.

“Mbete has become an obstacle to constructive debate and executive oversight in Parliament,” the parties said.

She could not, in good conscience, simultaneously hold the office of ANC chairperson and speaker.

“Mbete has a long history of placing herself and her party first. There are a number of factors that, taken together, disqualify Mbete from continuing as speaker of the house.”

According to Parliament’s rules, a simple majority (more than 50%) would be needed for the five parties’ motion to succeed. The ANC currently holds 62% of the seats in the house.
