Orange farm serial killer gets life

2011-03-09 10:33

A 32-year-old Orange Farm serial killer was today sentenced to three life sentences at the Vereeniging Circuit Court of the North Gauteng High Court.

David Nocela was convicted for the murder of Thembelani Nkuna, Joyce Mkhwanazi and Asanda Mhlanga, as well as two counts of rape and two of robbery.

Two of the murdered victims, Asanda Mhlanga and Thembelani Nkuna, were his girlfriends.

During sentencing Judge Boisie Mbha said that Nocela was a danger to society who carried out heinous crimes and deserved to be locked away.

Mbha said Nocela’s refusal to disclose his reasons for committing the crimes showed that he had no remorse and therefore no chance of being rehabilitated.

Nocela was sentenced to an additional 15 years for the rape of a 15-year-old in 2002.

Defence counsel Pieter du Plessis requested leave to appeal, which the judge refused, stating that there was no evidence to indicate that another court would have reached a different conclusion.

“I have to send a strong message that people who murder, rape and abuse women should be punished,” Mbha said.

The sentences will run concurrently.
