Orphan village opened in Durban

2011-11-04 14:36

A R90-million government-funded village for orphans and abandoned children was officially opened in Durban today.

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Zweli Mkhize conducted the ceremony before touring 16 of what eventually will be 96 housing units in the village in Verulam, south of Durban.

Once completed the village will boast sports facilities, a clinic, a creche, and a primary school and secondary school, Mkhize said.

He said in a statement the village was a model for dealing with a number of problems facing communities such as poverty, abuse, and unemployment.

“The village is situated on a farm and negotiations to acquire more land have started,” the premier said.

“We are going to end up with a situation where the village can produce its own vegetables, which can also be sold in the open market.”

The premier’s spokesperson Regi Khumalo said each housing unit would have a guardian or house mother to look after a family of up to six children.

“The project is an environmentally friendly setting, with most of the energy needs for the houses taken care of through solar energy,” he said.

Khumalo said water heating and most of the lighting was run by a solar system. The main electricity grid would only be used for minimal lighting.

“Gas cooking stoves are a standard fitting in all the housing units...” Teaching had already started with the help of volunteers.
