Oscar Pistorius’ ex says he kept gun on him all the time

2014-03-07 13:57

Oscar Pistorius’ former girlfriend has told the court he kept his gun on him “all the time” but that he was not particularly “scared” of being attacked.

Samantha Taylor, who dated Pistorius between 2011 up until his relationship with Reeva Steenkamp began, twice began crying on the witness stand when she testified about Pistorius’ alleged infidelity.

The first time she broke down was when prosecutor Gerrie Nel asked her how her relationship with Pistorius had ended.

“[It ended] when he cheated on me with Reeva Steenkamp,” she said.

Shortly after this, Pistorius’ lawyer, Barry Roux, asked about the two occasions their relationship had ended, causing Taylor to burst into tears.

Taylor also testified that she had heard Pistorius scream when he was angry at her, her best friend and his best friend and that he did not sound like a woman, “he sounded like a man”.

This flies in the face of one of the defence’s arguments in the murder trial, that Pistorius’ anguished screams that night sounded like a woman’s.

But Taylor did concede she had never heard Pistorius scream when he perceived his life to be threatened.

Taylor also testified that Pistorius had woken her up on a few occasions when he thought he heard intruders to ask if she’d also heard something.

“Was there any occasion where he got up the next morning to tell you he heard something?” asked Nel, to which Taylor responded “no”.

She testified that Pistorius had previously woken her up and then taken his gun with him when checking up on a noise.

This is contradictory to Pistorius’ behaviour on the night he shot Steenkamp, when he went straight to investigate the noise he had heard in the bathroom.

She also testified that Pistorius had shot his gun through the sunroof on the way back from a trip to the Vaal River, although she conceded that she could not remember exactly where this had happened.

Pistorius denies the incident ever happened.

She testified that this was after he had been pulled over by the police and that he had been angry that one of the policemen had picked up his gun from the vehicle’s seat.

Taylor also said that there had been another incident where she and Pistorius had been followed by a black BMW on the way home, that Pistorius had pulled up to his estate “jumped out of the car and held a gun to that person’s window”.

But Roux put it to her that Pistorius would testify that they were driving in a black BMW, while they were in fact being followed by a white Mercedes-Benz.

He said he got out of the car to divert attention from Taylor, but that he did not hold a gun to the car’s window.

The state is expected to call its next witness after lunch.
