Our wild, hot neighbour

2009-12-05 13:05

MUCH as the hyped-up birth of Shiloh Jolie-Pitt

brought attention to the inconspicuous country of Namibia four years ago, the

offbeat novels of Briton Alexander McCall Smith have made Botswana famous the

world over.

The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency novels, featuring the unaffected

Mma (madam) Precious Ramotswe, have now been turned into a film and TV series

starring US R&B soul diva Jill Scott, and the series is the perfect

showpiece for Botswana’s breathtaking landscape.

Botswana has a thriving diamond industry that rakes in at least

half of the country’s annual gross domestic product profit.

It has produced some of pop culture’s most loved icons such as

soapie stars Connie and Shona Ferguson, Thato “DJ Fresh” Sekwane and model

Kaone Kario.

The country’s Miss World contestant, Sumaiyah Marope, has been one

of the most popular among the 112 beauty queens currently in South Africa for

the competition.

So what more does the country have to offer?
