Originally from Uganda, comedian David Kibuuka has recently completed a run at the Nando’s Comedy Festival, he has also appeared in a string of local shows that include the Pure Monate Show as well as Laugh-out-Loud. As one of South Africa’s most notable comedians he has opened for the world’s top international comedians.

Life is … interesting. I was having mood swings and I thought I was pregnant but apparently I’m barren.

My first job was … working for my dad in a field clearing rocks. I was about 13 years old and one day my old man walked into the house and said that my brother and I had to clear this field and then at the end of it we would get video games. Yay. Two days into the deal my brother, who was 11 at the time, left. I toiled in the hot sun for a whole month working with prisoners my dad had hired, eating cowboy slices of white bread and drinking a cheap version of Oros, but what kept me going was the dream of video games.

One month later there were tears as I had to go back to school and my collegues had to go back to prison but we cherished the time spent together. Then we went to Dion’s to buy the video games. I chose some games then my brother started crying cause he wanted games as well then my folks bought him games as well. I hit the roof. My mother said that I should not worry about what other people are getting, just focus on my own things because in life there will always be people getting a better deal than you. This philosophy has helped me through life though I’ve hated Dion and video games ever since.

The most romantic thing I’ve ever done … is go all the way to the airport in Durban to give my girlfriend flowers. When I got there she forgot my name then tried to pretend that she didn’t call me George.

Right now I am listening to … Paulo Nutini’s new album, which is retro-funk western soul.

My real life hero is … my dad. He had the advantage of starting with the propaganda early.

My fictional hero … is Batman. If I work hard enough I can get money to save Joburg. I just hope the mask doesn’t slip off while I’m saving people cause that would be embarrassing.

My favourite place in South Africa is … the Winnie Mandela squatter camp. It reminds me of Uganda but with luxuries.

I love being around my family because … they are crazy. I reckon a couple of them could have been comedians it’s just that Idi Amin didn’t give them a chance.

My dream car is a ... Ferrari. I know it’s a waste of money and there are kids starving in the world, but what can I say, I’m a boy.

The one phrase I overuse is … blazing! I have no clue how it crept into my vocabulary but it is the word I use in place of the word “fantastic”.

Before the end of the day … I just have to say my prayers. My mama taught me too.

When I think of 2010, I think of ... turning 30 and the soccer World Cup obviously. And that I’ve got 70 years left to live.

What will I do with all that time. Maybe I should do a 27-year spell as well, but I need to find a good cause to do it for.

My favourite room in the house is my … lounge. It has a world-class view and it has my piano and guitars in it. I love those things.

My favourite childhood memory is wishing … that I was a petrol pump attendant. I just loved the window wiper thingy that they use.

My favourite all time old school track is … I Love to Truck by Dr Victor and the Rasta Rebels.

My next project is … writing a book. I’ve been writing it since the beginning of the year and all I hope is that people think it’s funny. What I would hate to hear people say is ‘I read that book of Dave’s and apart from my whole family dying it was the worst experience of my life.’
