PS: Zolisa Xaluva

2009-09-25 13:03

Zolisa Xaluva has been appearing on our television screens for quite some time now. He has starred in shows like Gaz’lam, Ugugu no Andile, Rhythm City as well as Tsha Tsha but it has to be his character as Jason on SABC1’s Generations that has earned him the most attention, turning him into a household name. Here he tells us what he thinks of two men making out on TV and why he doesn’t regret his on-screen kiss with Senzo.

Life is … full of surprises.

My first job was … as a grocery packer at Spar, it was in 1995 – I was 13 at the time.

The most romantic thing I have ever done was … I am very cheesy; I do the whole flower thing; obviously different flowers, I don’t get the same flowers all the time. Generally I’m not a very romantic person.

Right now I am watching … a film called RocknRolla by Guy Ritchie.

My favourite place to play … (Laughs) what do you mean by play? My mom is going to read this.

My real-life hero is … my mother.

My fictional hero … uhm, not Batman any more, Superman is overrated, not Spiderman either, okay I don’t really have one.

My favourite place in South Africa is … Durban. I’ve got some friends that side and I always have a good time when I’m there.

I love being around my family because … it fills my heart with joy to just be around them and just be reminded of how far I’ve come.

My dream car is … an Aston Martin.

The one phrase I overuse is … “you know”. I always find myself saying that. Even some of my colleagues are getting sick of it, you know. (Laughs) See? There I go again.

Before the end of the day … I take a nice long shower and go to bed.

I was so embarrassed when … I don’t get embarrassed easily, embarrassing things happen to me all the time and I probably don’t notice because I laugh them off.

Living the African dream for me would be… acquiring a lot of wealth and using it to give back to others. I know it is a cheesy thing to say but I love helping people, not just South Africans but Africa as a whole.

If I could change one thing about me it would be … my height. I wish I could be a bit shorter. It is quite awkward to be taller than most people.

When I think 2010 I think of … glory, pleasure, excitement, the pleasure and excitement of welcoming the rest of the world to our humble home. Just showing the rest of the world what we are made of and how diverse we are.

The best day of the week is … Friday, just to go home and unwind after a long week of hard work.

I knew my career and I were meant to be when … I started to feel a sensation inside of me whenever I went to work and just generally being excited about my work. I feel so much joy whenever I have to wake up and go to work and even when I hadn’t been working for a while I couldn’t wait to start working again. I love my job.

My favourite room in the house is … the lounge, where I can chill and watch movies, play video games and entertain my guests.

My favourite childhood memory is … getting a battery-operated helicopter for Christmas. I wanted it so badly and I honestly thought it came from Father Christmas. When I finally discovered there was no such thing as Father Christmas I was so crushed.

My all-time favourite old school track is … I would say Marvin Gaye’s Lets Get It On but many people would say that so I’ll say Aretha Franklin’s Misty Blue.

The difference between me and Jason is … he seems to be attracted to guys and I’m not at all.

When I see two guys making out on TV I … (Laughs) cringe a little. The day I saw my kissing scene with Senzo I cringed even though I expected it. But I’m a very open minded guy so I don’t think there is a problem with it.

My kiss with Senzo has … got me talking to a lot of people and answering a lot of questions. It’s all in a day’s work, I can handle it.

About the kiss; my friends and family … had mixed feelings. My family was understanding because they know that it is all part of an act, it is my job. My friends were taken aback a little; most of them were not even warned about what was going to happen to my character so you can imagine what a surprise it was.

I don’t regret the on-screen gay kiss because … it is a part of my job, it is what I do. I am part of a project that tries to challenge people’s ways of thinking and doing things and basically shaping their thoughts, and like I said, I love my job.

My next project is … hopefully a movie. My cousin has been working on a script; hopefully we can turn it into a film in the future.
