As the PSL reaches its climax, Daniel Mothowagae picks his candidates for player of the season.

Bernard Parker

Club: Kaizer Chiefs

Age: 28

Position: Striker

Parker is as good at scoring goals as he is in providing assists. His seven strikes in the first round were key to Chiefs topping the league table going into the festive break. He deservedly won the PSL player of the quarter for Q1 and Q2.

Itumeleng Khune

Club: Kaizer Chiefs

Age: 26

Position: Goalkeeper

Khune defines consistency. He improves with every game. His flawless ball distribution often turns defence into attack in most of Amakhosi’s transitions. The few games in which Khune was out injured were felt by the team, including the 2-0 loss to Platinum Stars last month.

Teko Modise

Club: Mamelodi Sundowns

Age: 31

Position: Midfielder

Modise has shown maturity this season. He seldom hangs on to the ball too much as he forms an integral part of the team’s build-ups. He has also impressed with his decision-making and tracking back when his side loses possession.

Sibusiso Vilakazi

Club: Bidvest Wits

Age: 24

Position: Midfielder

Wits owe their current success to their troops in the midfield. This is where Vilakazi has been outstanding with his creative play that is characterised by his ability to score goals coming from the deep.

Ronwen Williams

Club: SuperSport United

Age: 22

Position: Goalkeeper

United’s strong point this season has been their rearguard, which rates sixth among the best defences in the league. Williams has commanded his area well. His consistent communication with the defensive pairing of Edwin Gyimah and Mor Diouf always maintain the team’s discipline at the back. Williams has complemented his reflexes and shot-stopping skills with improved ball distribution.

Anssi Jaakkola

Club: Ajax Cape Town

Age: 27

Position: Goalkeeper

Jaakkola’s reliability in goal makes Ajax one of the seven sides that have conceded less than 30 goals so far despite their struggles this season. The Finnish goalie is particularly good at closing down attackers in one-on-one situations.

Puleng Tlolane

Club: Polokwane City

Age: 23

Position: Striker

Tlolane’s enthusiasm and runs into good spaces is the reason he easily finds a way to goal. He is a joint third top scorer with seven goals for a debutant in the professional ranks. His volley in a 1-1 draw against Free State Stars last month is one of the contenders for goal of the season.

Themba Zwane

Club: Mpumalanga Black Aces

Age: 24

Position: Midfielder

Aces coach Clive Barker once likened Zwane to a combination of former Bafana Bafana star midfielders Doctor Khumalo and Johan “Shoes” Moshoeu. Zwane is excellent with the ball at his feet and has good vision. His good understanding with Thabo Qalinge in the AmaZayoni midfield has benefited striker Tendai Ndoro, whose name is among the league’s leading scorers.

Robert Ng’ambi

Club: Platinum Stars

Age: 27

Position: Midfielder

The Malawian international provides the much-needed link between the Stars defence and strike?force. Dikwena’s play has mostly centred on his strength on the ground and in aerial play. Ng’ambi has also scored vital goals for Stars.

Keagan Dolly

Club: Ajax Cape Town

Age: 21

Position: Midfielder

Dolly has performed admirably in the Ajax number 10 role – behind the target?man. This is where he has showcased the various aspects of his game such as good first touch, ball control, passing and shooting. He is explosive when he charges at his markers and seldom loses the ball when he is in possession.

Kulegani Madondo

Club: AmaZulu

Age: 23

Position: Midfielder

Madondo is always heavily involved in his team’s build-ups. A good reader of the game, the hard-working player does not shy away from tackles. This has led to AmaZulu profiting immensely from his timely interceptions and swift passing – an apt contribution from a player whose nickname is Magnificent.
