Pandor named new Home Affairs minister

2012-10-03 12:50

President Jacob Zuma has appointed Naledi Pandor to fill the home affairs portfolio that was left vacant by the departure of Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma for the African Union.

Zuma also promoted the Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Derek Hanekom, as new science and technology minister.

Pandor formerly held the post.

The new appointments came as a surprise as Zuma’s office had just announced yesterday that Pandor would be acting home affairs minister, prompting speculation that the president was merely buying time ahead of the ANC’s Mangaung elective conference in December.

Ironically, Hanekom led the ANC’s national disciplinary committee that expelled Zuma’s nemesis Julius Malema from the ANC. The appointment might be construed as a reward to Hanekom by Zuma’s detractors.

In a statement issued by his office, Zuma said: “I congratulate Ms Pandor and Mr Hanekom on their appointments. They have distinguished themselves in their current portfolios and I am confident that they will do exceptionally well in their new responsibilities as well. I wish them all the best.”

The two ministers are expected to be sworn in at the Union Buildings tomorrow.
