Pandor takes hot seat in Zuma, Ramaphosa’s absence

2014-09-22 12:57

Science and Technology Minister Naledi Pandor will be acting president today and tomorrow, says the presidency.

“President Jacob Zuma is in New York attending the United Nations general assembly and Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa is in Lesotho executing his responsibilities as [Southern African Development Community] facilitator,” said Zuma’s spokesperson Mac Maharaj today.

Meanwhile, Ramaphosa has arrived in Maseru, Lesotho, for talks to restore stability in the kingdom.

“The deputy president is expected to spend two days in the country to facilitate a peaceful resolution of the political and security challenges facing the country, as mandated by SADC,” said Ramaphosa’s spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa.

Ramaphosa would be in Lesotho for two days.

The country has been in turmoil since an attempted coup caused leaders to flee to South Africa. Agence France-Presse reported that the funeral for a police officer killed in Lesotho’s abortive August 30 coup was held on Saturday.

The death of Lesotho police sub-inspector Mokheseng Ramahloko was the first and so far only fatality in the African nation’s three-week crisis.

Mamoepa said Ramaphosa would hold talks with political and other role players. Ramaphosa visited the country on September 18 as part of regional efforts to restore stability.
