Pants stripping, two sentenced

2011-05-14 08:16

Two men accused of stripping the pants off an Umlazi woman, beating her and burning down her house were sentenced in the Umlazi Regional Court yesterday, the Commission for Gender Equality said.

Spokesperson Javu Baloyi said Thulani Cosmos Cele was sentenced to four years and his co-accused Sibusiso Cele was sentenced to a year.

The two stripped Zandile Mpanza of her trousers, claiming that no woman should wear pants in Umlazi’s T section.

Mpanza was beaten, stripped and made to walk naked in public for wearing trousers. The Cele brothers were two of four men charged with attacking her and burning down her home in 2007.

“The sentence meted out to the accused is indeed effective and strikes a balance between the interests of society and that of the accused, which is appropriate in the circumstances,” he said.

“Ms Mpanza welcomed the guilty verdict of the Umlazi Regional Court in December last year as well as the sentencing of the accused today, stating that she now feels that she can get on with her life.”

He said the sentencing and incarceration of the accused had sent a clear deterrent message that injustice against women in society would not be tolerated.
