Paraplegic sues Mediclinic for negligence – report

2012-10-31 09:03

A man has successfully sued Nelspruit Mediclinic for negligence after being rendered a paraplegic by bed sores he developed while being treated for malaria.

The North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria found that nursing staff had not followed Mediclinic protocol on patient care, Afrikaans daily Beeld reported.

According to the newspaper today, George Vermeulen, a marketing manager from White River, in Mpumalanga, was admitted to the hospital’s intensive care unit in May 2007, two weeks after contracting malaria during a holiday in Mozambique.

The court was told that while being treated, he developed bed sores on his heels and lower back – one of them so big a general practitioner testified he could put his fist in it.

Medical expert Professor Nanda Nel had told the court patients in an intensive care unit should be repositioned at least every two hours to avoid pressure sores, but this had clearly not happened.

Beeld reported that Vermeulen was claiming almost R4 million from Mediclinic, but that the court had yet to determine the damages.
