Parliament, media houses discuss broadcast feed

2015-01-28 17:09

Parliamentary officials met media organisations yesterday to discuss the broadcast feed from the National Assembly ahead of next month’s state of the nation address.

The officials met the SA National Editors’ Forum and the Press Gallery Association (PGA) as well as major broadcasters, the SABC, eTV, Primedia and ANN7.

The meeting followed complaints from Sanef about the parliamentary audio and visual feed during disruptions in the National Assembly.

The parliamentary feed was cut from Parliament’s in-house TV and audio service in November when a scuffle broke out after Economic Freedom Fighters MP Ngwanamakwetle Mashabela called President Jacob Zuma a “thief” and refused to leave the House when ordered to.

In its joint statement yesterday, Parliament, Sanef and the PGA said the media organisations called for an overview of the current constitutional, legal and policy framework within which filming and broadcasting of Parliamentary proceedings occurred.

Parliamentary officials told the meeting about the improvements made to the broadcast quality and capability that would be operational for Zuma’s state of the nation address next month.
