Parliament prepares for ‘second phase’ of land claims

2014-07-28 16:10

MPs are set to conduct visits to land claims lodgement centres to assess government’s readiness to administer claims.

The lodgement of land claims reopened on June 30 when President Jacob Zuma signed the Restitution of Land Rights Amendment Act into law.

“The visit (by members of the portfolio committee on rural development and land reform) will afford members of the committee an opportunity to assess the government’s implementation plans, capacity and turnaround time to administer the claims,” said Parliament today.

The second phase of the land claims process allows people who missed the December 31 1998 deadline to register claims until mid-2019.

MPs will start their oversight visits in Mowbray, Cape Town, on Wednesday.
