Parreira’s choice

2010-04-29 11:39

Bafana Bafana coach Carlos Alberto Parreira and his technical team

will have to make a quick decision today whether to include Armenia Bielefeld

goalkeeper Rowen Fernandez in their 30-man 2010 Fifa World Cup squad for the

final camp in Joburg.

Parreira is expected to name his squad this afternoon following

their training camp in Germany.

The former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper met with Parreira a week ago in

Herzogenaurach, Germany, to talk his way back into the national team and the

Brazilian seems convinced.

Fernandez, who started light training this week, has not been part

of the Bafana team for over a year and has been out of action for six months

while nursing an injury.

Should he be considered for the squad announced today, it would

mean that Maritzburg United goalie Shu-Aib Walters will be left out in the cold

as Itumeleng Khune and Orlando Pirates’ number one, Moeneeb Josephs, have

guaranteed positions.

Fernandez spoke to Parreira again over the telephone on Tuesday and

has declared himself fit for the team.

But Parreira said he had not made any decision yet: “He has done

the test and we are waiting for the results. I guess we will get them on Friday.

It is strange that he has been out of the game for six months and still we have

to consider him. But being out of action for six month will be strongly

considered by the selection team.

“What should be considered also is that Rowen did not (have) an

operation but underwent conservative treatment on his leg. Our team doctor has

to consider a lot of things and then report to us before we consider him. We

hope that he will be alright.”

Parreira’s other nightmare is the availability of his foreign-based

players whose leagues end either on May 9 or weeks later, which will disrupt his

naming of the squad as he will have to put up a big squad before trimming it to

the final 23 on June 1.
