Parting Shot: We must all forgive and unite to save Safa

2013-09-30 10:00

It is not where you are that matters, but rather where you want to be.

Abraham Lincoln once said: “We cannot control the negative atmosphere of the world but we can control the atmosphere of our mind.”

Remember life is about choices and football is a national asset, bigger than all of us put together.

In other words, the sum of the parts will always be less than the whole.

As caretakers of this important national asset that has the power to unite the nation and inspire hope, we must never forget we are here to remain servants of the beautiful game.

It should never be about “I and me”, but should remain “us and we”.

Congratulations to those who successfully earned the privilege of being honourable members of our national asset.

It is a great honour to serve your country, an experience you will cherish if you understand that it is a labour of love.

A thankless task, in fact.

Let us now focus our attention on what matters to all of us as a country.

We need to focus our energies on:

»?Unity, because without a united Safa where all the role players are given recognition without fear or favour, and without making members feel intimidated on the basis that they do not subscribe to your own party or grouping, the association will suffer;

»?Development. The point of departure should be to put more resources and time into ensuring the effective implementation of the technical master plan.

It is most probably the only plan that will turn our fortunes around as a country;

»?Relationships with all the association’s members, the regions, associate members, the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee, the parliamentary portfolio committee on sport and recreation, the minister of sport and recreation, government, Cosafa, CAF and Fifa. Fostering strong relationships is key as part of our forward movement as a country;

»?Not adopting a spirit of “winner takes all” as it always results in a situation where the operation may have been successful but the patient dies.

It would be a hollow victory with no benefit to the game at all;

»?Honesty, ethics, hard work and integrity. They are critical to restoring lost trust.

Trust is all about instilling confidence through fairness and truth.

The element of back-stabbing must end if we are to restore a world-class organisation.

We have to respect each other.

Let gossip and backbiting not be encouraged in this great organisation of ours.

Let us protect this sporting code with all we have, as we cannot afford to lose it.

History will judge us for failing the nation if we fail to protect our gains over the years;

»?The current national coach, who should be contracted for two World Cup cycles to groom players from the junior levels to achieve long-term success.

There is clear support for a retention strategy;

»?The National First Division, which must be increased to double the size, ultimately to create a bigger pool for promotions to the PSL; and

»?Team work, which will ensure effective cooperation and integration of resources for the good of the game.

Let us forgive because we also want to be forgiven.
