Patient steals ambulance

2010-05-01 10:31

A patient desperate to go home from the Kopanong Hospital in

Vereeniging has allegedly stolen an ambulance from a parking bay outside the

facility.

ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said paramedics took an injured

man into the hospital, parking the ambulance in the emergency parking bay at

about 4am.

They returned 20 minutes later to find the ambulance missing.

One of the paramedics confronted a security guard who told him that

he saw a man with a bandage around his head climb into the ambulance, Vermaak

said.

“The security guard said the man had told him he wanted to go home

but could not afford a taxi.”

The security guard allegedly opened the gate for the man who drove

away with the ambulance.

Police and paramedics later found the stolen vehicle at a house in

Springcole, a few kilometres from the hospital.

“They found the ambulance still idling and with its lights on in

front of a house,” Vermaak said.

No one was in the house at the time.

Paramedics said all the equipment was still in the vehicle and

nothing appeared to have been stolen.

Police are investigating the incident.
