Permit change ‘unrealistic’, says MDC

2010-09-06 12:31

Plans to have Zimbabweans in South Africa apply for new permits following the end of a special dispensation by home affairs were impractical, the country’s MDC party said in Johannesburg today.

“Zimbabweans are comfortable being documented,” Movement for Democratic Change spokesperson Sibanengi Dube told reporters.

“But what we are saying is that South African home affairs will not produce the documents. It would be a mission for them to process all the applications for Zimbabweans when they are having trouble themselves producing documents for South Africans.”

Dube said it would be difficult under the best of circumstances, and would be even more difficult in the context of the public workers’ strike.

It would make life more difficult for Zimbabweans in South Africa, empower human traffickers and draw police harassment.

South Africa last week announced it was withdrawing the special dispensation for Zimbabwean nationals introduced in April last year. It relaxed entry conditions for Zimbabweans travelling to South Africa for work, learning and travel.
