Pics – Long Walk to Freedom red carpet moments

2013-11-04 14:44

The premiere of the long awaited Nelson Mandela biopic was a glittering affair even by Hollywood standards.

It attracted South Africans from all walks of life – from national treasures and icons to politicians, captains of industry, showbiz personalities and socialites. Titled Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom and produced by Anant Singh, directed by Justin Chadwick and starring British actors Idris Elba (as Nelson Mandela) and Naomie Harris (as Winnie Madikizela-Mandela), the film is based on Madiba’s best-selling autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom.

There was almost a stampede as photographers, fans and guests jostled for position to snap pictures of Madikizela-Mandela when she arrived on the red carpet at The Zone shopping centre in Rosebank, Johannesburg.

Elba’s arrival also caused commotion among the hordes of his female fans who were lined up to catch a glimpse of the towering star. Local actor Tony Kgoroge (who plays Walter Sisulu) leads the credits of South African talent, which includes Terry Pheto (as Evelyn Mase), Athandwa Kani (as young Mandela), Riaad Moosa (as Ahmed Kathrada), Zikhona Sodlaka (as Mandela’s mother Nosekeni) Jamie Bartlett (as prison warder James Gregory) and Lindiwe Matshikiza (as Zindzi Mandela).

President Jacob Zuma delivered a taped speech via a big screen behind the stage.

Spotted on the red carpet were Mandela’s wife Graça Machel, Trevor Manuel and Maria Ramos, Cyril Ramaphosa and Dr Tshepo Motsepe, Patrice Motsepe and Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe, Basetsana and Romeo Kumalo, Jeff Radebe and Bridgette Motsepe Radebe, Caiphus Semenya and Letta Mbulu, supermodel Alek Wek, and Mandela’s grandchildren Mbuso, Ndaba, Swati, Ndileka and Zoleka.
