Pienaar wants R820K a week

Bafana Bafana midfielder Steven Pienaar’s exorbitant wage demand has apparently scuppered his proposed dream move to English champions Chelsea.

The Blues had on Thursday put in a £3 million (about R32 million) bid for Pienaar but the 28-year-old is reported to have demanded a £75 000-a-week deal, a proposal which Chelsea coach Carlo Ancelotti rejected, according to yesterday’s edition of The Sun.

Now Pienaar is poised to move to Tottenham Hotspur where he will link up with Bafana teammate and defender Bongani Khumalo, who moved to the White Hart Lane club last week.

It is believed Spurs have tabled a £70 000-a-week wage offer although coach Harry Redknapp does not want to pay more than £2 million for the player. Last year Pienaar rejected Everton’s four-year contract worth about £55 000-a-week. The Westbury-born (in Johannesburg) star has made it clear that he wants to play Champions League football and the only way to do so was to move away from Goodison Park.

Pienaar’s contract lapses at the end of the current season, in May, and the Toffees are desperate to sell him now to raise cash to acquire new players. The club’s worst fear is that their stylish midfielder will go for free in June.

European giants Inter Milan and Bayern Munich are also reported to be interested in the midfielder, who was voted Everton’s 2010 Player of the Season.
