Electro-pop princess Eve Rakow is drawn to shopping on the streets of downtown Jozi.

To some, piles of clothes on the street spell disaster, but for The Frown’s Eve Rakow they define style.

A tight student budget was the reason she developed a taste for shopping in the streets of downtown Jozi.

‘I was studying for my BA in performance and directing, and came across piles of vintage clothes with items that cost as little as R2. I instantly fell in love with shopping there. It’s not a store; it is a street by Park Station that is lined with second-hand clothes. I thought I was in heaven,’ she says.

A lot has changed since then – Eve is now performing for crowds all over the country and becoming a force to be reckoned with in the music industry. Her love for street shopping, however, keeps going strong.

Eve says she enjoys going downtown for her shopping fix because it is authentically Africa.

‘It can be hard to remember that you are in Africa if all you know is the ’burbs. In town, there are people yelling, music blaring and a busy vibe that I love.’

On the music front, Eve is busy with The Frown. The duo (with Nick Nesbitt) has just come off a tour called The Rising Phoenix Magic Bus Tour where they travelled around the country.

They will also be releasing an EP titled Teenage Swim at the end of the month.
