Pirates look to keep slim title hopes alive against Chippa

2013-04-30 14:02

It’s a battle of potential champions and relegation strugglers as South Africa’s two biggest cities face off in the PSL.

A win for Orlando Pirates, who are hosting Chippa United, will make Kaizer Chiefs’ path to the PSL title a bit rockier. It will also condemn the “Chilli Boys” to almost certain relegation, ending what has been a tough Premiership stay.

A Pirates win will also require Chiefs to take maximum points from tomorrow night’s clash against Ajax Cape Town, who are also perilously close to the relegation trapdoor.

Pirates threw themselves back into contention with a 1-0 win over Bidvest Wits on Saturday, ending a six-match winless streak, which derailed their title chances.

It still leaves Pirates reliant on other results, but the victory showed chinks in Chiefs’ armour after the log leaders were held to a goalless draw by Platinum Stars on Sunday afternoon.

Chiefs, however, welcome back talismanic captain Itumeleng Khune, who missed the Stars game owing to suspension. Elsewhere, Sundowns could find themselves in the relegation dogfight should they fail to beat Free State Stars at Loftus Versfeld tonight.

After their 1-0 home loss to Bloemfontein Celtic on Saturday, Pitso Mosimane’s side finds itself on the brink of being the worst-performing Sundowns team in the PSL era.
