Platinum strike talks postponed for funeral

2014-02-14 11:52

Talks between the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) and platinum mining companies to end a strike in the platinum sector have been postponed, the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) has said.

“The meeting ... that was scheduled for this morning [Friday] has been postponed to Monday ... as Amcu officials have to attend the funerals of Amcu members,” CCMA spokesperson Laura Mseme said today.

The meeting on Monday would begin at 11am.

The CCMA could not elaborate on who had died and an Amcu spokesperson was not immediately available.

However, Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) said on February 8 that an Amcu shop steward was killed when protesters allegedly clashed with police on Friday, February 7.

Amcu members at Lonmin, Amplats, and Impala Platinum embarked on a strike on January 23, demanding a R12 500 basic salary for miners.

The platinum producers proposed a three-year agreement last month. The proposal was a nine percent increase for A-level workers, 8.5% for B-level, and 7.5% for C-level workers in the first year.

The CCMA has been mediating talks between the union and the platinum companies since January 24, but on February 5 the talks were adjourned so that the CCMA could engage with the parties individually.
