Police arrest hundreds of foreigners for illegal mining

2011-02-23 14:27

Hundreds of foreigners have been arrested for illegal immigration and trespassing in a police crime prevention operation at the St Helena Mine’s Number Four shaft in Welkom, police said on today.

“The operation was held as a result of criminal activities taking place at the St Helena shaft number four mine premises, where up to now 10 people were killed in relation to illegal mining,” said Captain Stephen Thakeng.

He said that in all the cases investigations were continuing. The foreigners were mainly from Lesotho.

During the crime prevention operation yesterday, various mining items were seized including gum boots, cap-lamps, caps, big hammers, garden spades, and dust-bearing gold material.

Thakeng said the Welkom Magistrates Court had arranged a special hearing for the group.

He said similar operations were planned to eradicate criminal activities taking place on mining premises, and that police would continue to engage mine bosses.
