Police can't speculate about top cop's death – Petros

2013-06-19 11:30

Police do not want to speculate on whether Johannesburg cluster commander Maj-Gen Tirhani Maswanganyi was killed because of his involvement in a murder case, Gauteng commissioner Lt-Gen Mzwandile Petros has said.

“He would have been, as a cluster commander, involved in the investigation,” Petros told reporters in Johannesburg today.

“We don’t want to speculate that this officer was killed because he was involved in the investigation.”

Petros said he was aware that Maswanganyi had been subpoenaed to testify in court, but he was not the key witness.

Maswanganyi was found dead in a field near Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria, yesterday.

He was found in the early hours of the morning in a bushy area near the road with his hands and feet tied.

A police patrol found Maswanganyi’s abandoned Isuzu bakkie next to the R101 on Monday evening. A police uniform and police identification card were in the bakkie, which prompted a search.

Petros said a postmortem was being carried out to determine the cause of death.
