Police deny reports suspect confessed to being Sunday Rapist

Police denied reports today that the man arrested for the kidnapping and murder of Florida high school pupil Louise de Waal confessed to being the “Sunday Rapist”.

“I cannot confirm that,” Warrant Officer Peet Du Toit said today. However, Du Toit said there was a “strong possibility” that the 35-year-old man was the “Sunday Rapist”, a man who raped a number of young girls in Gauteng and the North West on Sundays.

“We are working around the clock following up on all leads, but there is a strong possibility (he is the Sunday rapist) ... We can only confirm on Monday when he appears in court,” he said.

The man in custody allegedly kidnapped 17-year-old De Waal in Roodepoort, northwest of Johannesburg, on Wednesday morning. A burnt body, believed to be hers, was found on a farm in Magaliesburg later that day.

He handed himself in at the Margate police station, in KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday morning. He was later transferred to an undisclosed location in Johannesburg.

In 2007, he was arrested for sexual assault, convicted and sentenced to three years in prison. The sentence was suspended for three years with compulsory community service.
