Police find 29 people held captive in Orange Farm house

2013-06-10 10:59

Ten people were arrested for allegedly kidnapping a woman and her baby in Orange Farm, south of Johannesburg, Gauteng police have said.

Lt-Col Katlego Mogale said today the woman and her 16-month-old baby were reported missing by her husband on Friday.

“Police were alerted and proceeded to trace the woman. At first, the suspects had told the husband that they were in Soweto and he must deposit the money for the safe return of his wife,” Mogale said.

Police then traced the woman to a house in Driezik Five in Orange Farm.

Mogale said that inside the house, police found 29 people – 16 women and 13 men, most aged between 20 and 30 – who were also being held against their will.

The woman who was reported missing was found with her child at the house.

“The victims were from Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Ten suspects were arrested – nine males and a female,” Mogale said.

Police confiscated two minibus taxis.

Mogale said the Gauteng organised crime unit was investigating a case of kidnapping and had not ruled out the possibility of human trafficking.

The nine men and woman would appear in the Vereeniging Magistrates’ Court today.
