Police throw grenades at DA march

2014-02-12 12:33

Police today threw stun grenades at people dressed in ANC gear, as they ran towards DA marchers on Rissik Street in downtown Joburg.

A Sapa reporter said some people wearing ANC colours threw bricks at the police as this happened.

Police stopped the DA march soon after it began, saying this would be too dangerous. DA supporters sang the national anthem.

DA leader Helen Zille was preparing to address supporters shortly after midday.

The DA march in the city centre was about “real jobs”.

Earlier, Zille accused the ANC of gathering with rocks and bricks at Beyers Naude Square in Joburg without permission.

“Police have not stopped them and they are armed with bricks,” she told reporters at the Westgate transport hub.

“They’ve gathered in large numbers without police permission.”

The DA march over “real jobs” was scheduled to end up at Beyers Naude Square, about a block away from the ANC’s Luthuli House headquarters.

Zille said the ANC’s stance would not stop the DA from marching as it had a right to do so.

“We have to take a stand ... this is a democracy.”
