Policeman tricked, wounded in house robbery

2010-10-05 07:29

A policeman was wounded in Soweto this morning after being tricked by a house robber, Gauteng police said.

The warrant officer, from the Kliptown police station, was in a critical but stable condition in hospital, Captain Mpanda Khoza said.

At 2.30am, the warrant officer and a constable responded to a housebreaking in progress and found a house window opened.

“They saw a suspect inside and ordered him to come out,” said Khoza.

“He told the police he was not alone and that other suspects were hiding in the toilet outside.”

The constable went to check the toilet and left the warrant officer behind to watch the gunman in the room. “The robber quickly shot the warrant officer and he fell down. The suspect escaped.”

The constable found no one in the toilet.

Police believe there were no other robbers and that the gunman had tricked them to escape.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said the officer sustained a wound in the chest and was airlifted to hospital.

It was unclear what was stolen from the home.
