Toya Delazy has broad appeal. Her songs are played as frequently on Highveld as on Metro. Her second album, Ascension, is due out soon and this week she revealed the artwork and dropped the first single – Forbidden Fruit.

It opens all gospel and then a bassline thumps in, with drawling rock-pop vocals and some rap thrown into the eclectic mix.

Two #Trending reporters share their views:

Grethe Koen

It’s as catchy as all her previous tracks. The first time I saw Toya doing her stuff was in her video for Pump It On. I couldn’t help but love this stylish woman.

I mean, what have we had in the past by way of pop stars? Danny K and all those interchangeable Idols winners? I can’t wait for the Forbidden Fruit video.

Charl Blignaut

Ja, it’s Toya Delazy doing her shtick. I like the image more than the music. The track’s cute, but there’s nothing new here.

It’s all a bit early Imogen Heap meets Juluka. I’m afraid I won’t be singing it in the shower.
