Popcru: Cele is fake general

2010-04-30 17:06

Waving placards reading “Cele, don’t bring back apartheid” and

“Viva community policing”, a few hundred members of the Police and Prisons Civil

Rights Union (Popcru) marched to the ANC headquarters, Luthuli House, in Johannesburg today.

They called police chief General Bheki Cele a fake general and said

he should join the defence force if he wants the rank of general.

The marchers were protesting against Cele’s alleged unilateral

decision to change the police service to a police force.

Nkosinathi Theledi, the general secretary of Popcru, said they were

opposed to using “apartheid police style” military ranks.

He said they were marching to Luthuli House because it was against

ANC policy and wanted the leadership of the movement to intervene.

“Militarising the police would not lead to discipline but to

command and control. This happened during apartheid and we don’t want a repeat

of that.”

Theledi said it would alleniate the community and make community

policing impossible.

ANC treasurer-general Mathews Phosa received the memorandum and

said he would deliver it to Cele’s office.
