Poptartology: A present from Simphiwe Dana

2013-06-23 06:00

South Africa’s first lady of Afro soul Simphiwe Dana surprised us all with this tweet:

It seems the singer-songwriter had made a video for a track called Mayine (“Let it rain”) off her 2010 album Kulture Noir that she wasn’t happy with at the time.

For some reason, maybe because she loves us, she decided to let it go and drop it on the interwebs.

It’s all about “being cursed and shackled by a lack of self-awareness” says the artist. It’s dark and mythic and actually quite gorgeous.

It’s been a Simphiwe Dana kind of week. A new book by feminist author Pumla Gqola, A Renegade Called Simphiwe, has just hit the shelves and Dana has a new single out called Nzima.

While she was at it, the renegade diva also posted an a capella version of her track Zandisile on Soundcloud.

Zandisile was her debut album, the one that won every award in town in 2005.

We love it when she’s cleaning out her closets.
