Poptartology: Music video of the week – Noir Rising

2013-05-16 14:11

Cape Town-raised musician Petite Noir has released a new song and video, called Noirse, that’s getting the internet all worked up this week.

It’s received 23 000 hits on YouTube within 24 hours of being released.

Noirse is a teaser for his debut album that will be dropping later this year.

Watch it and you’ll see why everyone’s touting the young soloist with the deep voice and broody lyrics as the next big thing in world pop.

The 22-year-old artist – whose real name is Yannick Illunga – was born in Belgium to Congolese and Angolan parents, but was raised in Cape Town. He references a new wave eighties vibe and reinvents it with a deft display of new school beats that tap into African rhythms.

You can read an interview with him here – where he broke the news to City Press that he had just signed a major deal with Domino Records and was leaving South Africa to record in London.

But before he releases that, he has a date with Solange Knowles in New York. He’s her main support act and will be opening for her at the prestigious Northside Music Festival in Brooklyn on June 16.

It’s his biggest booking since leaving South Africa and the show was sold out within days of being announced.

Illunga calls his music noir wave, a retrofuture sound that he launched independently online. His debut single, Till We Ghosts, marketed with a striking, self-produced music video, captured international attention and, since then, the music press has been raving.
