Power struggle leads to holy war in Soweto

2014-05-11 15:00

An average week at a church in Dobsonville, Soweto, comes with allegations of company fraud, fake signatures and fist fights.

Now the power struggles between the directors of the Guta Ra Mwari Church have been moved to a courtroom.

In court papers filed at the Roodepoort Regional Court, which City Press has seen, church elder Kalani Ndlovu is accused of unlawfully removing two church members as directors of the Guta Ra Mwari’s trust.

Jolham Ncube and Mbangiseni Mbambo claim in court papers that Ndlovu faked their signatures on resignation letters.

But Ndlovu says he was given power of attorney in 2004 by the church’s leaders and was just using his “discretionary powers”.

Ndlovu says he was instructed by church leaders in meetings in 2010 and 2011 to remove Ncube and Mbambo as directors because they had “transgressed” the church’s laws.

He told City Press he had instructed an agent from the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission to remove the pair’s names as directors by using resignation forms he’d signed. He did this because he had a “mandate from the church and power of attorney”.

“I would never hijack a church. Why would I do that to an entity with no money?” he asked.

Several members of the congregation who asked not to be named alleged that the matter had even degenerated into a fist fight at one point, but Ndlovu denied this.

Ncube said he was shocked when he found out he’d allegedly been sacked by proxy. The unholy battle continues in court on Tuesday.
