Prasa drops Metrorail strike application

2010-12-14 14:10

The Passenger Rail Association of SA (Prasa) withdrew a court application against the United Transport and Allied Trade Union (Utatu) today to prevent further Metrorail strike action, the union said.

“In an unexpected ‘twist’, the Passenger Rail Association of SA withdrew their application this morning [Tuesday],” said Utatu general secretary Chris de Vos.

Prasa spokesperson Nana Zenani would not confirm this, saying a statement would be issued later today.

An interim order issued in the Labour Court in Cape Town declared the strike by Utatu members illegal and unprotected.

Utatu members had since stopped striking against changes in their shift roster.

“We will continue to request Prasa to stop the implementation of the new rostering agreement and are meeting the Prasa negotiating team this afternoon,” said De Vos.

“We give Metrorail commuters the assurance that any intended strike action will be preceded by the normal 48 hours or more notice period to Prasa, to allow them to make alternative travel arrangements.”
