Principal accused of misuse of funds

2011-10-25 07:33

The principal of a school for the disabled has been accused of wasting R1.7 million on a “worthless” school bus and R11 000 on a private overseas trip, according to a newspaper report today.

Parents and teachers said Benzi Tenza, principal of the Ezintabeni School for Physically Disabled Children in Katlehong, was trying to shut down the school in an attempt to cover up misuse of funds, The Star reported.

Tenza is accused of deliberately allowing conditions at the school to deteriorate, leading to leaky, stinking toilets, broken doors and cracked floors. The school had been without water since Friday.

The principal, with officials from the department of education in Ekurhuleni south district office, faced angry teachers and parents in a meeting yesterday. They demanded Tenza be suspended while a forensic audit into alleged misuse of funds was conducted.

Ekurhuleni south district director Jerry Bhagaloo confirmed to The Star that the provincial department had launched an audit.

Tenza denied R1.7 million was spent on the bus. He said the 65-seater had cost R1.1 million.

On the R11 000 spent on a trip to Canada, he said the school had agreed to pay the 50% flight subsidy. Tenza told the newspaper the school had been without water because contractors damaged a pipe.
