Proteas T20 hope to turn around Sri Lanka disappointment

2013-08-02 08:48

Colombo – The Proteas T20 squad will be tasked with turning around the Proteas’ disappointing tour of Sri Lanka when the first of three T20 Internationals takes place at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo tonight.

Captain Faf du Plessis says the squad is dejected after the ODI series loss, but will need to look ahead and focus all of their energies on the T20 campaign.

“We have some new faces which is great,” du Plessis said of Imran Tahir, David Wiese, Wayne Parnell and Henry Davids.

“They bring some fresh energy which helps, especially after such a disappointing performance in the ODI series.

“We were outplayed by Sri Lanka in the ODIs, so we are going to have to dig deep, that is going to be important.

“We have a lot of pride in our team, we don’t want to go down in this series, we want to compete and win it.”

Du Plessis is excited to have the attacking leg-spin option of Tahir, who makes his debut in the T20 International squad.

The Proteas are hoping he will have the same effect as the Sri Lankan spinners, who accounted for the bulk of the wickets in the ODI series.

“It’s great to have Imran (Tahir) with us,” he said.

“He is an attacking spinner, he gets wickets and that is something the Sri Lankan spinners do well.

“They come on and immediately pick up wickets, it’s nice to have that kind of option in the team.”

The Nashua Titans duo of Wiese and Davids are both explosive options with the bat, and bring an exciting attacking mindset to the group.

Parnell has fully recovered from the groin injury which initially kept him out of the ODI series.
