Protector to approach Free State government

2011-08-08 14:30

Public Protector Thuli Madonsela will approach the Free State provincial government over several complaints about RDP houses in the province.

During Madonsela’s visit to the province last week, residents of the Ipelegeng township outside Brandfort complained about a lack of RDP houses, the provision of water, sanitation and the awarding of municipal tenders.

Madonsela said she would give feedback on these complaints within two months.

Her meeting with the community formed part of a nationwide stakeholder consultative forum that was launched in July this year.

This comes against the backdrop of two investigations into housing and sanitation-related matters in the province, launched by the Human Rights Commission (HRC) in Free State.

The one investigation involved the open-toilet scandal in Viljoenskroon. The other looked into the fate of five families that were left destitute after their houses were bulldozed in December last year.Free State Premier Ace Magashule promised the families that their houses would be rebuilt before Christmas last year, but seven months later their houses were not completed.
