Protesters gather as Marikana commission inspects violence-affected areas

2012-10-02 10:24

A group of protesters has gathered near the Wonderkop hostel where the commission of inquiry into the deaths of 46 people is conducting an in loco inspection of areas affected by the violence.

The protesters carried banners calling for the prosecution of the police, while some held up photographs of the miners who died when police opened fire on strikers on August 16.

They also brandished flags of the PAC and banners of the National Council of Trade Unions. Some wore black T-shirts with Remember The Slain of Marikana written on them.

Matthews Hlabane, a spokesperson for the group calling itself the Democratic Left Front, said that they are demanding that those responsible for the deaths of the miners be prosecuted.

“We are saying that whoever gave police the command to kill, should be brought to justice,” Hlabane said.

He said the poverty and lack of development in the area does not reflect the wealth generated through platinum mining.

“It is sad that there is no water in the areas where people live, but there’s plenty of water in the factories,” Hlabane said.
